Institutional Incubation

Cynthia Bond is a writer, performance curator, and media producer. Most recently, she curated and produced body ± New Works in Dance and Technology at High Concept Labs, an evening of performance featuring work by visual artists and choreographers interrogating technology as it both supplements and supplants the moving body. Bond has also acted as dance dramaturg for contemporary dance and ballet.

Cynthia Bond by Gracie HagenBond produced the film short Self-Deportation: The Untold Tale of a Marginal Woman (Full Spectrum Features), an official selection of Pineapple Underground Film Festival (Hong Kong) and the DC Asian-Pacific American Film Festival, among others. Bond’s poetry has appeared in Best American Poetry and journals, and she has published cultural criticism on film & TV, and on images of race in popular culture.

During her year-long institutional incubation at High Concept Labs, Bond will be developing several projects. Performing Home brings together choreographers and performance artists with dramaturg scholars and activists to create work addressing “home” from both a performative and socio-political perspective, exploring the legacy of Chicago’s construction of difference through space. Other projects include Book of Hours, a dance piece based on a poem cycle Bond wrote that draws on medieval illuminations of the months of the year.
