How Balinese Opposites Attract; An Introduction to Music and Culture of Bali, Indonesia

Immerse yourself in a percussive orchestra of gongs, metallophones, cymbals and knobbed pot gongs in a lecture workshop hosted by Claire Fassnacht and members of Chicago Balinese Gamelan. Equivalent to the word “orchestra”, gamelan is a traditional ensemble and genre of music from Bali, Indonesia. Discover the beautiful music that is gamelan and its ties with the rituals, ceremonies and customs of Hindu Bali culture.

  • Featuring a presentation by Claire Fassnacht, Director of Chicago Balinese Gamelan
  • Performance demonstration by members of CBG
  • Opportunity for audience members to try the beautiful instruments themselves!

This event takes place on the 5th floor of Mana Contemporary Chicago, in studio 519.
