With wit and candor, Evans presents a contrasting set of ideas – myth and science, concrete and abstract – of coyotes in American culture through stories of coyote run-ins, trickster mythology, human-coyote coevolution and the federal government’s hundred year war against coyotes. Evans has created a new collection of stories and music, Coyoteways, creating a lush sonic landscape for this performance. The music and narratives guide the audience through a lens to see our ecology, such as it is, and how we can find myth in everyday life through coyotes. Cellist Nora Barton joins Evans for this performance.

Nat Evans is a composer and artist based in Seattle, Washington. His interdisciplinary works range from site-specific events and installations to chamber music, scores for dance and film, conceptual works based in ecology and social practice, to meditations on everyday life.
His work is regularly presented across the United States, and has also been presented in Europe, South America, Australia and China. Evans has received numerous commissions including The Henry, Odeon Quartet, San Francisco MOMA, Seattle Art Museum, The City of Tomorrow, Portland Cello Project, ALL RISE, The Box Is Empty, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, among others.
Works and events by Evans have been featured on WNYC’s New Sounds and BBC3, as well as in LA Weekly, WIRED, The New York Times, The Believer and numerous other publications. His work has appeared at galleries such as Interstitial, SOIL, The Frye Art Museum, Greg Kucera, as well as Mediate Art Soundwave Biennial, Aqua Art Miami, NEPO 5k, and other festivals.He studied music at Butler University with Michael Schelle, Craig Hetrick and Frank Felice.
A Chicago-based cellist and educator, Nora Barton embraces versatility within many different genres. Her collaborations range from experimental improvisation to movement-inspired “marching band” to preparing classical works for community performances. Most recently Nora has been working on repertoire with the Open Source String Quartet to present at performances throughout the summer. Nora also works as a session musician and performs regularly with local rock bands and songwriters. She holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Roosevelt University.
Julia A. Miller is a sound artist, guitarist, improvisor, composer, visual artist, curator, and educator. As a guitarist, Julia performs in the band Volcano Radar with Elbio Barilari, which has been joined by Edward Wilkerson Jr., Rollo Radford, Harrison Bankhead, Tim Davis, Lou Ciccotelli, and Avreeayl Ra. Volcano Radar moves fluently through a stylistic range from noise-funk improvisation to structured sonic forms. Julia has also performed in the avant electric guitar trio HKM with Mark Hardy and Reid Karris; the electroacoustic trio, Auris, with Eric Leonardson and Christopher Preissing; and the power quartet Gmleteye with Frank Abbinanti, Julian Berke, and Nick Alvarez. Julia is a founding member of the Chicago Scratch Orchestra with Jeff Kowalkowski and Dan Godston, and also a founding member of the artist collective Articular Facet, a multimedia opera working group. Julia is a frequent soloist and collaborator in experimental and avant garde chamber music.
William Harper is a Chicago photographer and composer. His photography is concerned with natural form, line and mythologies drawn from the landscapes, wildlife and natural events of the Midwestern and high plains states. His photography has been shown, Darkroom Gallery in Vermont, Black Cloud Gallery in Chicago, Kat Kiernan Gallery in Virginia, the Dayton Visual Arts Center, Lincoln Center in Ft. Collins, Walker Fine Arts in Denver, Flatfile Gallery in Chicago, The ARC Gallery in Chicago, and is currently showing at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins and at Transistor in Chicago. Harper’s opera, music theater, dance, orchestra, and chorus have been commissioned and performed by companies including The Minnesota Opera Company, The New Music Theater Ensemble of Minneapolis, INTAR Hispanic American Cultural Center, The Goodman Theater, Hartford Stage, Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company and The Music Theatre Group. William Harper received a PhD in music composition from the Eastman School of Music and teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
