The current media landscape requires that artists participate in an economy that is built for the mainstream (of mass production, marketing, advertising, publishing, and streaming) or fulfill the needs of the non-profit sector (grant-writing, fundraising, documenting) – leaving emerging artists few options for producing, circulating, and monetizing their work.
OTH-ERS (“Oh the Humility! Electronic Resources and Services”), an artist documentation initiative, creates opportunities for artists and arts organizations to document their practice, offering subsidized rates and collaborative assistance while exploring distribution platforms for radical work in music, dance and performance.
Through its Institutional Incubation at hcl, OTH-ERS aims to cultivate a microeconomy of artists, organizations and services in Chicago and beyond. In collaboration with hcl and rKAD, OTH-ERS will award documentation grants to artists and ensembles through an application process.
OTH-ERS is a new project initiated by artist/musician Matt Mehlan. Based in Brooklyn for the last 10 years, Matt fronts the experimental band Skeletons and the multimedia project Uumans, runs the record label Shinkoyo, co-founded the original Silent Barn art space, and produced documentaries about musicians and artists for Roulette TV, an on-going cable access TV program produced by the venerable new music institution Roulette.
