Sara Zalek is an artist obsessed with time travel, experimental science, hybrid animals, permaculture, and the intentional act of transformation. Inspired by Hijikata, Kazuo Ono, Yoko Ono, Pina Bausch, David Bowie, poetry, fluxus, and expressionism, she aims to develop greater openness, acute listening, and fierce collaboration while embodying the collective psyche.
Engaging otherness as it relates to transformative power, Sara uses Butoh training, poetry, drawing, and object-making as starting points. Her creative endeavors are specifically meant to ignite dialog with the public using unexpected encounters; always with unknowns, often with humor, with an intentional focus on the moment when the self is limitless potential.
Sara is most excited to share experiences with artists currently in residence at High Concept Laboratories and MANA Contemporary‒to explore cross-disciplinary work and play, and to be in dialog that encourages more active and direct participation in the pursuit of a thriving economic model for the arts in Chicago and America.
Sara Zalek is a dedicated drifter, born in Minneapolis, MN, lived and worked in Boston, Seattle, Czech Republic, Portland, and now Chicago. She earned a BA in Marketing from Syracuse University in 1991 and BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2006. Since 1998, she has been a fierce advocate, designer, and web developer for artists.
Sara has collaborated in over 50 unique performance works and creates solo performance installations using Butoh technique as a primary base of training and teaching. Her work has been featured at venues nationally, including Chicago Cultural Center, Millennium Park, Hamlin Park, Links Hall, Defibrillator Gallery, Co-Prosperity Sphere, Dance Theatre Workshop (NY), Merce Cunningham Studio (NY), Headwaters Theater (PDX), and she received CAAP grants in 2007 and 2009 for performance works. In 2012, Sara was a LinkUp Artist with Aurora Tabar, and in April of 2014 she was awarded a DCASE grant to curate and produce Chicago’s first Butoh Festival.
She currently serves on the Board of Directors for both The Space Movement Project and Antibody Corporation, and recently joined Pentacle to continue her mission of cross-pollinating audiences, artistic collaborations, and performance in the public realm.
